Chief Tiantai Buddhist temple, Tojuin temple is one of the Ezosankanji (three Ezo temples) which Edo Shogunate erected as court-built temples.

The other two temples are the Zenkoji temple (Jodo sect) in Usu, Date and the Kokutaiji Temple (Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism) in Akkeshi.

Tojuin temple was built in the Ainu place of residence for the purpose of the enlightenment of Ainu, and restoring the mental balance of citizens.
